PEEL, ISLE of MAN trip May/June 2018

ZIG ZAG goes to Peel, Isle of Man

A trip is planned from Warrenpoint to Peel, Isle of Man, on Wednesday 30th of May, to take in the TT races. We have a boat load this time, with the Skipper plus 4. The usual suspects, Damian 'Birdy' McCartan and 'Pablo' McNulty are joined by Neil ' The Quiet Man' Ryan, skipper of 'Lazy Bones', and Daithi Rodgers, skipper of  'Pembroke Dawn'.

Leaving Warrenpoint on the late evening tide, we aim to arrive in Peel for the afternoon tide, in time for a 3 hour window to enter Peel marina. It is a 12 to 13 hour trip, all things being favourable.

Pictures of Peel, and the marina, are shown below :

Summary of trip

Left Warrenpoint at 10.45 pm Weds May 30th on the last of the flood tide. Reached Hellyhunter buoy 2 hours later. Almost no wind for all the journey, and the little that there was, was almost on or near the nose. Hence, the Iron mainsail through the night. 'Ray' the autopilot worked hard. Very calm crossing, only managed to raise the jib for a couple of hours. Daylight began to appear after 3 am. Brief sightings of 2-3 dolphins, nothing else of note. Arrived in Peel bang on midday and berthed in E99 - next to where we were last visit. Peel was nice and busy with motorcyclists, over for the TT races. A nice atmosphere about the place.

Trip back -  departed Peel at 00.45 am on Sunday 3rd of June. Sharp watch needs to be kept for the many crab/lobster pots until 5 miles off Peel. Slight wind, SW, on the nose, iron mainsail did its work again. AIS working on way out, not working now !! Clear night with the Plough, Jupiter and Mars prominent. Raised the jib near daybreak, which added an extra 0.5 knots to the speed. Zero wind from 07.30 am. Very smooth crossing, no cetacean sightings, plenty of banks of sea fog, which burnt off as the sun rose.  Disappointing that no really good sailing could be had !! Arrived back at Warrenpoint 13.30 pm.

Big lesson learnt ? 5 fellas on a Westerly is not a good idea, and does not work.
