Red Star Boat tragedy 1954

1954 drowning tragedy with 8 fatalities...
The boat named the "Nauti Cal" was swamped after fouling the propeller with a rope. All except one abandoned the boat and swam for the shore just off the Bull Point between Carlingford and Omeath.

Even though they were strong swimmers the strong tide and current took its toll. The only survivor, Charlie McDonald from Newry, stayed on the boat and was eventually rescued by one of the rescue boats. The fatalities were Hugie O`Hare, his wife Maisie, and young son Brian. The sister of Masie`s, Bernadette (Pip) Ogle, Ernie McManus ( Uncle of Sean ), Joe, Barney and Frank O`Hare. The other fatality was Josephine Keegan a teacher from near Carlingford.
