Loughshinny - May 2015

Loughshinny and Fin Whales

Zig Zag had a great trip to Loughshinny, with a good sail down the east coast. We anchored in the small bay, and headed to the pier
when the tide rose.

Two good sightings of Fin whales on the way down - the second largest cetacean in the sea. An incredible amount of bird life and activity.

On the way back, we came upon this pod of Fin whales again, with 11 close sightings of about 4 whales. Birds of all kinds were all around in great numbers, and we could literally pick them off the sea. Feathering produced no fish - my guess is that the whales were feeding on Herring, and the birds were picking up the scraps. We followed them for over two hours, it was incredible. Activity was centered about 4 miles off Clougherhead.
